Legislative Update & Endorsements

With just under two weeks remaining in the Oregon legislative session, there’s still time to make sure that your legislators hear from you about what’s important to you.

Oregon Gun Laws Strengthened: Last week, the Oregon legislature passed HB 4145, which closes a loophole in Oregon’s gun laws (the “boyfriend/girlfriend loophole”) that allowed convicted domestic abusers and stalkers to legally buy and own firearms. Please thank you legislators for voting for this bill and urge them to continue to pass legislation to end gun violence.

Take Action to Support the National Popular Vote: Please contact your State Senator and let her/him know that you support the Interstate Compact for Agreement Among the States to Elect the President by National Popular Vote. Here’s a sample script:

Dear Senator __________________:
I understand that Senate President Peter Courtney is going to allow a vote on a clean NPV bill (no ballot referral) this session. Do you plan to vote yes on this bill? I hope so.
It is time Oregon joins the NPV compact in the way the Constitution allows: via state legislatures.
The National Popular Vote was first introduced in Oregon in 2009, and although it has always had strong support, it has always died in the Senate. It’s time to change that. NPV is good for our nation and for Oregon.
Please support one person, one vote. Please support the clean NPV bill.
