Alameda Schools Try On More Permissive Dress Codes

Check out this interview on KQED with Lisa Frack, former president, of Oregon NOW and the co-author of Oregon NOW’s model dress code, on the Alameda School District’s new dress code!

Alameda schools began the new school year this week with a much more lenient dress code. For the first time in the school’s history, crop tops, short skirts, hoodies, and pajamas will all be acceptable attire. The new dress code was adopted over the summer after students advocated for changes pointing out that the former dress code disproportionately impacted and shamed girls. We examine the growing movement to make dress codes more equitable. What are your thoughts on lenient dress codes? What is the role of schools to ensure students dress appropriately?
