NOW Hails House Passage of H.R. 4 John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

Washington, D.C. — The House of Representatives took a giant step forward today on behalf of democracy by passing H.R. 4, John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. There can be no half-measures in defense of our freedom to vote.  Either every vote is protected, or no vote is safe.  For democracy to work for all of us, it must include us all.

Today’s House vote is a historic course correction that strengthens our democracy, spotlights a structurally racist system and reaffirms our national commitment to free and fair elections. Racial discrimination links more than 400 introduced state bills and 30 enacted laws creating barriers to the ballot box for millions of Americans, especially communities of color.

The late John Lewis devoted his life to “good trouble” on behalf of democracy. Today, the House stood proudly on his shoulders by passing his bill.  NOW calls on the Senate to stand up for democracy, and the freedom to vote for everyone, no matter their race, background, or zip code, by passing the Senate version of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act without delay.
